These are my picks for wellness retreats to inspire you for the year ahead - Judy Chapman

When you are feeling depleted and can no longer ignore your body’s signals that you are running on empty, then consider Vana Retreats in Northern India. This five-star ashram-style destination is known as ‘a refuge for all beings’ and has gained reputation for their deeply transforming retreats centered. The minimum stay is five-nights. From learning to breathe fully to mindful eating and restorative treatments, Vana is a place to rediscover sanity of soul.

Launched in 2018, Revivo Wellness Resort in Bali offers a more luxury resort-retreat experience (which means you can travel here with your partner or friend who may not want to partake in all the wellness activities). Previously an Aman property, you can only imagine how stunning the accommodation and facilities are. We were wow'd by their signature Nutrio wellness cuisine that is quite frankly, the most tastiest and well-presented wellness cuisine we've tried. Signature retreats include Sleep WellMother-to-Be and Anti-aging and Emotional Rebalance to name a few.

Experiencing insomnia, stress or weight issues? I highly recommend Oneworld Ayurveda in Bali for their Panchakarma 'detox' programs. Recommended for chronic stress, insomnia, anxiety, weight-loss and other modern diseases, an Ayurvedic Panchakarma is a serious cleanse. It consists of daily health consultations with the Ayurvedic physicians, prescribed vegetarian meals, herbal medicines, treatments, yoga, meditation, wellness talks and more. The accommodation villas are lovely and the yoga bale is just 'wow', but its their twice-daily Ayurvedic treatments that felt incredibly nourishing.  You can also do your Panchakarma in silence. Trust me, an annual Ayurvedic detox will do wonders for your health long-term

If you long for a retreat that offers you a chance to let go of old wounds and beliefs and feels deeply healing, then you may be ready for a Path of Love Retreat. Established 22 years ago in India, these seven-day residential programs are held in 14 countries around the world and have gained reputation amongst those who seek to know the truth about themselves.  Whilst shrouded in privacy, your program consists of activities and workshops that challenge you to let go of the old in order to bring you into a state of aliveness and intensity for an authentic life.  During the retreat you will be guided to shed layers and strip away any of the falsity that characterizes so much of what we see in the world today, and in ourselves. Expect to emerge reborn.

Looking for an authentic yoga retreat that is more about the quality and depth of the yoga than a luxury villa? Radiance Retreats are facilitated by author, Jessie Chapman, who has been running retreats in Australia, Bali, and Europe for fifteen years -  she knows what she is doing.  Radiance Retreats work for beginners to the experienced yoga practitioner and are designed to help slow down and rebalance your mind. Meals are nutritious and organic and most include nature walks and hikes. Jessie's retreats vary from lush yoga & spa in Bali and yoga & hiking in the Pyrenees to her popular new years eve getaways in Byron Bay Australia.

Be prepared to regenerate on all levels when you embark on a lung-cleansing hike at Aro-ha, a sustainable boutique retreat located in the South Island of New Zealand. Sleep in luxe cabins and nourish on a delicious rainbow of organic vegan plant-based cuisine. There's no inflammation-causing coffee, processed foods and sugar so we suggest you wean yourself of these a week before. All of this is complimented with daily yoga, massages, strength functional training and informative workshops. Aside from the sub-alpine hikes, the high-point here is the sacred day of silence. The spa offers an epic 'sauna with a view' and outdoor hot and cold therapy pools for communal open-air bathing. This retreat is worth saving up for!

Learn to become a yoga teacher – on a wellness retreat! Yoga Arts have been running yoga teacher training programs around the world for over a decade and recently launched their very own retreat destination The Shala Bali (in Bali of course)!  It's a beautifully designed and intimate place with stunning bungalows and villas, a yoga shala as well as vegetarian cafe and a simple yet gorgeous Ayurvedic spa (we loved their marma-point facials). This is a fabulous choice for those who want to deepen their practice in serene surrounds - or are looking for a career change!

You can host your own retreat at Menla Mountain Retreat situated a couple of hours drive from New York City. Set on 325 acres of gorgeous hiking trails, we love Menla for their year-round rustic yoga and spiritual retreats - some of which are facilitated by the esteemed Robert Thurman. Accommodation ranges from standard to deluxe or you can share a dorm, pitch a tent, and even sleep in a yurt!  One thing that is for certain is the organic food is superb (much of the ingredients are grown on-site). The centerpiece is the Dewa Spa renowned for its exceptional Tibetan-inspired treatments (the healers here are amazing). Check their calendar for visiting healers, spiritual and meditation workshops.

When you can’t get away for a retreat then explore urban spas like Melbourne's Willow Urban Retreat. It's a beautifully designed wellness space with daily yoga and movement classes, a wholefoods cafe and year-round events, workshops and retreats. They offer an inspiring ‘become the best version of yourself' immersion that you can book as a half-day to three-day experience to a six-week program. This consists of wellbeing consultations, mindful and movement classes, ayurvedic treatments, infrared saunas, lifestyle workshops and personalized meal plans. Willow's ethos is all about rejuvenation, regeneration and self-empowerment - it's a must-visit!

Also in Australia is Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat that is highly-regarded for its seven-night detox programs focused on reducing inflammation in the body at a cellular level. Experience a well-rounded itinerary of consultations, group bush walks, fitness, yoga, and spa therapies. No coffee, alcohol or sugar all week will give your liver a break.  A highlight is the daily wellness seminars that provide all the motivation you need to upgrade your health. Set on 200 hectares of pristine forests with limited wifi, you also have a rare opportunity to switch off and take a digital detox as well.  As resident Nutritionist Carolina Rossi says: 'It's essential to have regular detox as long-term exposure to toxins like pesticides, preservatives, heavy metals and environmental pollutions effect our adrenals, gut health and liver function and can lead to disease.'
