My job as a Wellness & Spa Curator involves frequent travel so keeping fit on the road takes some prioritizing. Fortunately I recently discovered BARRE, that is an highly effective exercise, serotonin-boosting that is not only fun but kind of addictive - in a good way! Like yoga, there seems to be a variety of types of Barre, but in general they all involve a blend of intensive muscle-melting cardio, ballet barre movements and toning exercises that stretch, sculpt, shape and elongate your body giving you that desirable ‘dancer-like’ posture. Many instructors include props like light-weights, stretch bands and resistance balls that target smaller muscle groups. The good news is Barre is fast going global with studios popping up in all the right spots. Even better, classes usually last an hour so are ideal for types like me who just can’t do the two-hour yoga class. Below are some of my favourite classes around the world…
With only a few studios in London, I was fortunate to discover BARREtoned is an easy 15 minute walk from Notting Hill Gate tube station. The full body workout offered here focuses on targeting the small muscle groups, elongating your muscles and increasing flexibility to give you that desirable dancer-like body. Staff are warm and nurturing and the instructors are possibly the most conscious I’ve encountered – who don’t let you get away with much. Afterwards head around the corner for lunch at Daylesford (www.daylesford.com/notting-hill/), a fabulous organic farm-to-table café.

Pilates Bali Studio, Bali
Situated on a hidden windy lane, this Bali Pilates Studio is a licensed Xtend Barre studio and offers Pilates Reformer, Pilates Matt and - Xtend Barre - a no-holds session of some serious sculpting blended with ballet barre and cardio packed with isometric exercises that make your guns, buns, abs and everything burn - all to uplifting music. Toning is paired with orthopedic stretches designed to elongate your muscles and make you stand taller. Drupadi offers some of Bali’s best kept places to eat including my favourite, Zibiru, an authentic Italian restaurant.

Studio 12, Munich, Germany
For a kick-ass, circulating-boosting, butt-burning class, look out for Tanja Krodel’s Cardio-Barre at Studio 12 in central Munich. Set in a beautiful historic building, classes include Barre-Fusion, Boot-Camp, Power-Hour and Pilates, kids yoga and yoga for men to name a few. They have a great selection of clothing, props and coconut water for sale. The great news is the classes are kept to a maximum of 8 so instructors have time to make corrective adjustments that help you evolve more quickly in your practice. I can’t wait to go back to another class.

Core Kandy, South Yarra, Melbourne, Australia.
I was thrilled to discover this studio near where I was staying in Melbourne over summer and have been recommending my Melbournian friends to give it a go ever since. Core Candy is the vision of Candice Ota, a former lawyer, who discovered Barre while living and working in New York. Core Kandy offers Barre, Accelerate High Intensity Training (HIT) workouts, Yoga and Pilates Springboard. The Barre classes I did here were aptly challenging (is Barre ever easy?) and gave me the one-hour sweaty workout I needed in-between indulging at many of Melbourne’s Italian restaurants.

Exhale, New York
Exhale in Spring Street in Soho is where it all began for me. Where I finally found an exercise that was high-energy, fun yet challenging and produced great results in a short amount of time. Exhale core fusion classes are so intensive, one can’t help but be 100% present during these muscle-melt workouts – especially when surrounded by long-term followers whose tall sculpted postures are an inspiration. Exhale has locations sprouting up all over New York and beyond, I particularly love their Central Park South opposite Central Park, for its light, spacious studio, spa and tempting retail area.
Next stop – Physique 57 in New York (physique57.com/nyc/) that I am informed is one of the world’s best studios and where it all began…watch this space.
