Vegan beauty is not only about being petrochemical and paraben-free but now embraces themes including ethical, raw, sustainable and food-grade. Vegan beauty skin care, in particular, is a rising category in the spa and beauty world - and defines products that do not contain any animal derivatives whatsoever and are 100% cruelty-free. The more I travel the more fabulous non-toxic brands I discover but if I have to narrow it down then here are six of my favorites for the year - all created by six amazing women! By Judy Chapman
not-a-sponge by Maggie Gunning
I’ve been obsessed with the not-a-sponge.com brand ever since they launched back in November 2012. And the good news is that today they are on the shelves at some of the best spas around the world. These skin-softening face and body cleansing sponges are made from a mineral-rich Konjac root vegetable grown in Korea and are possibly the purest sponges on earth! They are certified 100% biodegradable and vegan. The ultimate europhic skin food - select from sponges infused with exfoliating bamboo and charcoal.
Coconut + Salt Mineral Body Lotion by Suzanne LeRoux of One Love Organics
Spotted this certified organic range at Thinkheyday.com, a fantastic facial-focused-spa concept in New York. Love their Coconut + Salt Mineral Body Lotion that is presented in easy to travel functional packaging! This product is formulated from virgin coconut oil, organic aloe vera and sun-dried Atlantic sea salt. Another winner is their Chia Whip foaming cleanser infused with omega-rich Chia seeds. One Love Organics are all produced in micro-batches, are certified Ecocert and are GMO-free and 100% cruelty free.
Digital Detox Bath by Shannon Vaughn of Pursoma
I recently discovered this unique detox product at the beautiful Sacredspaceny.com, a healing pod at Yelo Spa in New York. This detoxifying bath blend is made from raw, vegan and highly active grey sea salt paired with french green clay - and works to draw out toxins and discharge radiation from overuse of technology from your system. Simply immerse your being into bathwater for twenty-minutes and let go of the addiction to be digitally tethered in order to feel connected. Take a break from tech - this really works!
Exfoliating Facial Polish by Su-Man of Su-Man Skincare
Equally obsessed with the range (and facials) by celebrity facialist, Su-Man, a former dancer turned skincare pioneer. Her award winning Exfoliation Facial Polish is created with ground coffee, camu camu, white lily and dragon’s blood and has one of the most alluring scents ever plus feels amazing on the skin. Su-Man is often the guest facialist at The W Hotels around the world and is endorsed by actors including Juliet Binoche. Her rock-star facials can be experienced September 15th-19th, 2015 at The Carlyle Hotel in New York.
Vapor Rub by Danielle Glover of Simple as that
What do you get when a pharmacist gets passionate about organic? Simpleasthat.com.au is created by Australian-based pharmacist, Danielle Glover. Her unique skill is curating products made with six ingredients or less. I love her Vapor Rub that is a natural alternative to Vicks and contains antispectic oils of eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint and lemon oil to aid congestion. Her entire range is presented in simple packaging and is 100% vegan, organic and fair-trade approved.
Muscle-Ease by Farida Irani of Subtle Energies
I was thrilled to finally experience this brand first-hand on my recent stay at Six Senses Zighy Bay in Oman. Love their Muscle-Ease product that is a potent blend of kunzea, ashwagandha and clove and can be used directly on tight areas of the body to help relieve tension. This extensive Ayurveda-aromatherapy based range can be experienced at some of the best spas around the globe.
